[00:00.17]- This is how I blew all my Disney money.
[00:01.80]I started making money with Disney
[00:04.22]when I was 16.
[00:06.72]And there's a law called the Coogan Law
[00:09.02]that protects minors
[00:11.79]from their parents spending all their money.
[00:14.24]That's not exactly what happened to me,
[00:16.24]but I will take you on a journey
[00:18.64]to my path of financial fluency
[00:21.15]and how I made and lost millions of dollars.
[00:24.66]So basically, you start to make money every week,
[00:28.65]you negotiate at a certain rate
[00:31.27]for how much you're gonna make per episode.
[00:33.64]Eventually, you get to renegotiate.
[00:35.55]That's why agents are super important
[00:37.67]is because they can help you negotiate higher rates
[00:40.49]and even things like residuals.
[00:42.79]I mean, those are sort of fixed rates.
[00:44.77]Which by the way, in case you didn't know,
[00:46.23]residuals reduce by 10%
[00:49.29]for a 10-course cycle.
[00:51.31]So assuming my shows were in syndication
[00:54.59]and we do that after 65 episodes
[00:57.25]and "Kim Possible," "Even Stevens,"
[01:00.08]they were in syndication,
[01:01.07]so I got residuals for a long time.
[01:03.25]I really regret not investing my money wisely.
[01:05.77]I didn't get a house.
[01:07.40]I didn't take any money and store it away,
[01:09.65]other than the Coogan money.
[01:10.70]That money, I used towards going to college at 18.
[01:14.00]I left the business and I went into college,
[01:17.40]and I took a lotta that money and put it
[01:19.61]towards not having student loan debt.
[01:21.28]That was smart, sure.
[01:22.68]Except that I left school a year and a half in
[01:25.96]and then I had this money at my disposal.
[01:28.71]I was never told how much money I was making.
[01:31.38]Money didn't have a purpose for me.
[01:33.03]I didn't really know what it was.
[01:34.55]I just knew that I had it and I didn't care about it.
[01:36.81]That's a problem.
[01:37.74]You gotta teach kids the value of each single dollar
[01:41.26]that they make, everything that they do,
[01:43.57]the energy that it brings to their life,
[01:46.20]and what it takes to make that dollar.
[01:48.26]It's a relationship that you have to it.
[01:50.25]I wasn't really fluent in how to take care of my money.
[01:53.59]At 21, I decided to part ways with my family
[01:56.64]for like a year because I didn't like the way
[01:59.47]that my money was being managed.
[02:01.00]And it was a sad year for me,
[02:02.55]but it was also an interesting year.
[02:05.56]I started to understand that I had a certain amount of money
[02:08.63]and that made me feel super confident.
[02:10.32]So I would go to the stores,
[02:12.08]I would buy really big-ticket items
[02:15.11]from like Ralph Lauren.
[02:16.99]So much so that I actually had a friend
[02:19.08]who worked there who was my personal shopper.
[02:21.93]Funny how he wasn't my friend when I stopped shopping there.
[02:24.75]I tried my best to class myself up.
[02:28.13]At the time, I was also dating somebody
[02:29.83]who kind of gave me this like stigma
[02:32.73]of not being good enough.
[02:34.40]And a lotta people were telling me I wasn't good enough.
[02:36.79]And so I was using buying things and money as a weapon.
[02:41.78]I felt like if I could just buy certain things,
[02:44.28]I would feel better or if I just lived a certain lifestyle,
[02:47.57]I would be closer to that joy
[02:50.48]of feeling accepted and a lot less alone.
[02:53.90]Because I felt really dumb
[02:56.59]for not knowing about my money,
[02:58.84]and I never really made peace with that.
[03:01.37]Even to this day, there's nothing that I can really do
[03:04.43]about the fact that money came and went.
[03:06.68]So for example, the biggest regret I have
[03:08.73]is that a psychic came into my life
[03:10.90]and managed to get a bunch of money from me.
[03:13.20]I will definitely talk about that another time.
[03:15.01]But some other crazy purchases that I made,
[03:17.43]I had a '72 Corvette that my uncle from Ohio
[03:21.61]didn't want and so, he offloaded it to me.
[03:24.50]I was having to do all this work on a car
[03:27.23]that I never even drove.
[03:29.07]I would have anybody that was dating me at the time,
[03:31.82]"Please drive my car.
[03:33.28]Please just drive it so that we can have fun together."
[03:36.28]That's so sad.
[03:37.74]Anyway, I did away with the car.
[03:39.14]I bought, bought being the operative word,
[03:43.19]and you should really just lease,
[03:45.27]a G wagon Mercedes, every month payment, really bad on gas.
[03:50.27]
[03:51.49]It was when it first came out too,
[03:52.87]so everybody was super into this car
[03:55.46]and I just needed to have it.
[03:56.98]I mean, you think you have this extravagant life
[03:58.92]and then real life hits you in the face.
[04:00.49]It's like, no, now you have to maintain the car.
[04:03.13]Now you to put nice gas in the car
[04:04.74]'cause it's a particular type of engine.
[04:07.05]Overall, I was not being taught how to manage my money.
[04:11.69]For example, when I was 21,
[04:13.30]I had a record deal, I had a book deal.
[04:14.88]And in that year, I made just about $1 million.
[04:18.77]And in that same year, I spent it.
[04:21.20]I pretty much had like a loss.
[04:22.92]And I know that sometimes
[04:24.04]that's like a good thing to report, but it's really not.
[04:26.85]You wanna know that you've made money
[04:28.62]and that some of it's saved.
[04:30.80]It's really sad.
[04:31.81]But really, there's no purpose in fretting about the past.
[04:35.97]Everything that happens to us has to be a lesson
[04:39.34]that we can grow from.
[04:40.61]I went back to school,
[04:41.95]and I went back to school on a grant
[04:44.14]so that I could finish my degree finally.
[04:46.09]And I think I was like 30,
[04:48.46]and I went back to school another time.
[04:50.27]But in the process of getting my degree,
[04:52.76]it was like 12 years long.
[04:55.09]So I'm just like a lotta people out there.
[04:56.95]I have student loan debt
[04:58.57]and I'm trying to pay stuff off.
[05:00.92]And meanwhile, I have kids.
[05:02.84]Now, my biggest thing about child actors,
[05:05.55]you aren't told that the work is gonna slow down.
[05:08.17]In fact, I was told the opposite.
[05:09.99]Specifically, by my mom, some of my team,
[05:13.31]even my money manager at the time.
[05:14.69]"Oh don't worry, 'cause the residuals come,"
[05:16.83]or, "Don't worry, 'cause you're gonna keep making money."
[05:19.47]And you know, it's interesting.
[05:20.93]It bred a sort of contempt in me.
[05:23.54]It was a tremendous amount of pressure.
[05:25.30]And I think I self-destructed, to be perfectly honest.
[05:27.73]After my mom stopped working with me for that year,
[05:29.88]I was like three hours late to auditions.
[05:31.93]I would like not get there on time
[05:34.49]'cause I was just not mentally in the pocket.
[05:38.00]I was overwhelmed pretty much.
[05:40.00]And so the transition wasn't smooth for me,
[05:42.93]monetarily, emotionally, anything.
[05:45.22]There's ways to avoid this and maybe I am somebody
[05:48.69]that's wanting to open up to you
[05:49.81]so that you can learn from me.
[05:51.42]But I will say, invest that money in ways that matter.
[05:55.66]The tricky thing is that when you're young,
[05:57.35]you need to be taught the difference
[05:58.60]between asset and liability.
[06:00.96]So a dollar can either make you more money
[06:03.28]of you're just giving it away.
[06:04.68]And so when those numbers started to go down,
[06:07.57]I felt like I needed to like just perform
[06:10.70]and then the joy of performing got taken
[06:13.53]because all I wanted to do was make more money.
[06:16.26]And so yeah, I mean, it very easily becomes
[06:18.47]about making money for you.
[06:20.24]I did a lotta movies I didn't wanna do.
[06:22.41]There was a specific movie I actually did
[06:24.85]that I'm not proud of,
[06:26.01]and now I've got two daughters.
[06:28.37]I love them dearly and I would never, ever want them
[06:31.78]to go through what I went through.
[06:33.13]Basically, I did a nude scene.
[06:35.63]I had never thought in a million years
[06:38.99]that I would ever do something like this.
[06:40.47]I was America's sweetheart,
[06:41.76]morally sound in my mind.
[06:43.83]I believed in the Disney magic.
[06:45.32]I still do.
[06:46.39]And then I felt so exploited and marked and horrible.
[06:51.39]
[06:51.90]So obviously, I'm okay now.
[06:53.79]I ...........
