[00:11.06]We’re in the heart of South Africa and we’re playing at being
[00:17.00]the guys from Europe arriving in Africa.

[01:10.58]I think that’s something we only previously saw in “Pussy.”
[01:15.04]In my opinion, that’s what made the song so incredibly special
[01:18.26]and a great summer hit.
[01:20.14]But the song’s lyrics are also very controversial – very sharp and edgy,
[01:24.38]leaving lots of room for me
[01:26.42]to exercise my creativity and come up with something really off the hook.
[01:31.32]The song “Ausländer” (Foreigner) inspired me
[01:34.00]to put Rammstein in an inflatable rubber boat, wearing life jackets, rowing across the sea
[01:37.58]because that is something you definitely don’t do, normally.
[01:40.08]But that’s exactly why I wanted to do it, because that’s who Rammstein are for me.
[01:42.30]You confront society with its own images – bang!
[01:55.36]The only way to deal with racism is to take a satirical approach.
[01:58.36]That’s exactly what I wanted to do with “Ausländer.”
[02:00.96]Even if the song comes across as a happy vacation song.
[02:07.62]Making videos is a lot of fun,
[02:10.02]but what we’re actually doing is covering a bit of an old story.
[02:13.86]It’s the story of how Whites first came to Africa and how they were being received.
[02:19.34]The song is actually really funny.
[02:22.82]I hope it comes across as an ironic story.
[02:45.40]Some of the African costumes were totally authentic and decorated with real bones, real shells, etc.
[02:53.80]That’s also true for the clothes we brought from Germany for Rammstein.
[02:57.90]We got them at costume supply shops in Berlin – just real historical stuff.
[03:02.50]Flake wears a silk linen suit that cost a fortune.
[03:06.42]Some of the safari suits still had labels in them saying “German South West Africa.”
[03:10.70]Those were real clothes from the ’20s and ’30s.
[03:13.48]Some of the pieces needed to be altered, but they were GENUINE!
[03:53.50]Then there’s the little side story with Richard and Flake.
[03:56.14]I got the idea because Flake is usually the one
[03:59.20]who gets chased across the stage
[04:02.20]with a flame thrower,
[04:05.22]as he does on this current tour.
[04:08.20]But in this scene
[04:11.08]it’s a Russian Kalashnikov
[04:13.90]– an allusion to his East German background, so to speak.
[04:16.68]I could’ve taken any weapon but I found a Kalashnikov. It’s very loud and produces so much gunfire
[04:19.60]that it totally stirs up the dust – regardless of whether
[04:22.54]it’s loaded with real bullets or not.
[04:34.74]It was definitely a fun ride. We wanted to have a good time shooting the video,
[04:37.70]since it’s a fun song.
[04:40.76]But some of the fun ends up getting stuck in your throat
[04:43.74]– because of the barbaric way we’ve behaved over the centuries.

[05:09.14]I was overstepping so many boundaries with that video
[05:11.32]and in a way that’s no longer socially acceptable these days.

[05:17.28]Well, that’s how I was being carried. It definitely doesn’t get me off.

[05:28.56]and acting like a total jackass because he thinks that’s the way to do it.

[05:37.42]He does so in a missionary outfit that implies
[05:39.66]he’s also teaching them religion.
