[00:07.65]and this week we celebrate one of the
[00:09.36]biggest collaborations in rock history.
[00:11.63]It’s Queen and David Bowie’s
[00:13.35]Under Pressure.
[00:23.95]By 1981, Queen had bought the famous
[00:26.53]Mountain Studios in Montreux –
[00:28.54]and it was during one recording session
[00:30.23]there, that Studio Engineer Dave Richards
[00:32.60]made an impromptu phone call.
[00:34.39]"They were recording there
[00:35.65]and, David knew that I was in town,
[00:36.90]and phoned me up and asked me if I’d
[00:38.23]come down, if I’d like to go down
[00:40.34]and see what was happening.
[00:41.30]So I went down and these things happen,
[00:42.62]you know, suddenly you’re writing
[00:43.71]something together and it was totally
[00:46.67]spontaneous, it certainly wasn’t planned.
[00:48.73]It was peculiar."
[00:50.52]"Well, I think the process
[00:51.76]was we were all drunk, and in the studio,
[00:54.57]and we were just for fun we were playing
[00:57.38]all sorts of old songs.
[00:58.92]I remember a couple of old Cream songs,
[01:00.66]and whatever came into our heads
[01:04.53]and I think David said
[01:06.03]"look, hang on a minute,
[01:07.27]why don’t we write one of our own?”
[01:08.65]"We were fooling around
[01:09.94]and then just sort of jamming with tracks
[01:12.04]and suddenly we said 'why don’t we
[01:13.23]just see what we can do
[01:15.01]on the spur of the moment?’"
[01:16.19]"Then there's the pressure
[01:17.51]of his majesty, David, being there,
[01:19.75]and everybody wanted to look suave
[01:22.55]and quick with ideas and stuff."
[01:25.30]"Deacy of course came up
[01:26.27]with this riff, ding, ding, ding,
[01:27.36]de de, ding, ding."
[01:29.86]"Bom, bom, bom, de, le, dah, dah."

[01:36.43]"He kept playing that over and
[01:37.72]over and over again."
[01:40.26]"And then we went
[01:41.47]for a pizza and he forgot it.
[01:43.75]Completely escaped his mind.
[01:45.60]We got back and I remembered it."
[01:49.90]"And of course we're used to
[01:51.16]playing together and now we have
[01:53.00]this other guy there, who’s also
[01:54.81]inputting, inputting, inputting."
[01:57.04]"David’s idea to put
[01:58.11]all these clicks and claps,
[01:59.38]and then it just, the sort of track grew."
