[00:08.51]This is Queen The Greatest
[00:10.15]in which we celebrate a song that was
[00:11.64]not only a hit single with an iconic video,
[00:13.74]but also led to one of the band’s
[00:15.26]most memorable live moments.
[00:17.09]It’s Radio Ga Ga.
[00:27.72]Queen’s 1984 album, The Works, was
[00:29.59]a perfect example of how the song writing
[00:31.86]responsibilities within the band,
[00:33.44]had evolved over the first 13 years…
[00:35.71]“In the early days,
[00:36.67]it was Brian and Freddie who really
[00:38.32]used to write most of the material,
[00:39.50]but over the last five years, Roger and I
[00:43.80]have started to contribute more.”
[00:45.55]“I think the time has
[00:46.33]come where we actually, in song writing,
[00:48.26]we’re actually completely even.
[00:50.61]Roger will come up with something like
[00:51.84]Radio Ga Ga, and it’s perfect.”
[00:57.12]“On a Sunday afternoon,
[00:59.08]my son Felix came in and he’s very young,
[01:02.22]and he just sort of went
[01:03.96]‘ah, Radio Ka Ka’, ‘cos he’s half French.
[01:08.22]And so I just thought,
[01:11.43]‘that’s quite nice’. You know.”
[01:15.25]“Sort of put the backing
[01:16.22]track together and then presented it
[01:18.19]to Freddie who really loved it.”
[01:28.24]The song raced up the British charts,
[01:29.75]and became a worldwide hit,
[01:31.27]unsurprisingly attracting a huge amount
[01:33.34]of Radio play.
[01:34.57]However, ironically given the song's
[01:36.28]subject matter, it was the video,
[01:37.82]directed once again by the brilliant
[01:39.48]David Mallet, that caught the imagination
[01:41.55]of the MTV generation.
[01:43.82]“We had a killer video,
[01:45.26]which we put a lot of work into.”
[01:52.71]“And the whole thing
[01:53.56]just felt good and it felt of its time
[01:55.51]and it felt a bit different.
[01:57.00]Felt modern, and it was very fresh.”
[02:05.21]Inevitably, some members of the British
[02:06.88]press wanted a reason to dismiss it,
[02:08.96]and accused Queen of incorporating
[02:10.51]Fascist imagery – a notion that Roger
[02:12.64]found more amusing than annoying…
[02:15.28]“That was so absurd,
[02:16.36]I mean it was actually meant to be about
[02:18.68]the film, you know it was meant to sort of
[02:20.32]mirror the film, and the oppressed workers
[02:24.61]and etcetera.
[02:26.23]And the Nazi thing’s laughable really.
[02:30.59]People will always find...........
