[00:00.26]- So here's why I don't talk to Shia LaBeouf anymore.
[00:02.38]Everybody always asks me this question.
[00:04.04]If we're still in touch, if we're still friends.
[00:06.27]To be honest, I don't even really know
[00:07.41]if we were ever really friends, but we were coworkers.
[00:10.60]We had this sort of like very good onscreen chemistry.
[00:14.62]People assumed that we were in real life,
[00:17.33]brother and sister,
[00:18.84]and that in real life,
[00:20.73]I had an influence over what this guy did.
[00:22.91]Watch "Honey Boy" and it's like
[00:24.45]he's a completely traumatized young man,
[00:27.38]at the same time that I'm working with him.
[00:29.53]I'm honored that people would think
[00:31.54]that I would still be in touch with him
[00:34.16]because it means that we really did a good job
[00:37.37]of making you guys think that
[00:38.48]we were real life, brother and sister.
[00:40.02]But in reality, it just wasn't like that.
[00:43.05]We weren't really close.
[00:44.09]So I remember meeting Shia
[00:45.66]in the green building of Disney Channel.
[00:48.28]We did our chemistry read, which means that
[00:50.08]you have an actor and the other actor comes together
[00:52.82]to see if they have chemistry.
[00:54.30]Apparently we did, spoiler alert.
[00:55.88]He had two different colors of hair on his head.
[00:59.37]It was my first impression of him.
[01:01.09]So he had like blonde splotches of highlights.
[01:03.73]He had like clothes that were not fitting him.
[01:06.34]He just looked the part.
[01:07.51]He looked like a scrappy, young kid.
[01:10.33]And I come in with like a Ralph Lauren suit,
[01:13.10]super high turtleneck, my hair in butterfly clips,
[01:16.37]and I just was like going for it.
[01:17.93]I was like, "This is me."
[01:19.28]And I was the character and he was obviously the character.
[01:22.03]And I think in some ways it was lightning in a bottle.
[01:24.14]Not just for me, but for the channel and the producers,
[01:26.54]because I'm sure they were tasked with this big job
[01:29.31]of having to find the right kids.
[01:31.07]They probably were super happy,
[01:32.41]which is what I felt come off of that room.
[01:35.13]The energy that came off of that room was just so exciting.
[01:37.64]We were these young kids put in this very unique situation.
[01:41.00]We had very raw talent.
[01:42.60]He had a knack for comedy and my comedy
[01:44.82]was a lot more of a straight man.
[01:46.41]And so we were like an instant comedic team.
[01:48.91]And so from there we got the parts,
[01:52.21]we're so excited, we to show up to set,
[01:54.98]I remember seeing his mom.
[01:56.83]His mom is a vibe and I wish her the best.
[02:01.67]It's weird you know, it's like I said,
[02:03.48]people just assume you know people
[02:05.68]just because you work with them.
[02:07.09]And you really don't, like I didn't know
[02:08.73]a lot of the backstories that came out
[02:10.21]about where they were living at that time
[02:11.88]and how much hardship they'd seen and stuff like that.
[02:14.39]And like, I just kick myself 'cause I really do kind of wish
[02:17.71]if I had known anything about him,
[02:19.33]I could have been a little bit more patient?
[02:21.53]I don't know, but I was dealing with my own thing.
[02:24.07]I was moving cross country for the opportunity.
[02:26.78]I was kind of sad about a breakup or something when I was 16
[02:30.56]and I was dealing with my own drama,
[02:32.39]you know, more kid stuff, it just kind of happened that way.
[02:35.01]I'm trying to think about the first time
[02:36.44]that he and I really bonded.
[02:37.82]And I think that was when we went to Wango Tango,
[02:40.92]which is this like big concert event.
[02:43.15]We went together and I remember seeing him out of work,
[02:46.84]thinking to myself, "Wow. I think he's really cool."
[02:50.11]He was younger than me,
[02:51.01]but he always had so much confidence.
[02:52.39]He had so much confidence in himself,
[02:54.53]so much confidence in just being out and about.
[02:57.22]And I was very nervous.
[02:58.49]I had a lot insecurities in being around people
[03:01.82]and he just didn't ever have that.
[03:03.75]He would go out and just like do crazy, funny,
[03:06.13]like almost like "Jackass"
[03:07.63]or something like Johnny Knoxville.
[03:09.23]He would go and he would do crazy things to people.
[03:11.71]And being around him felt dangerous.
[03:13.68]Like even as a little kid, it was like,
[03:15.58]he's really cool and he's wild, he's crazy Shia.
[03:19.34]So the antics continued.
[03:21.40]I guess because I had a theater background,
[03:23.40]I took my job very seriously.
[03:26.13]Getting into character, remembering my lines,
[03:28.64]had a great time building this character.
[03:31.02]But over time it became a job.
[03:33.13]And you know, you're tired from doing other things,
[03:36.98]trying to have a social life.
[03:38.66]I think he was dealing with so much more.
[03:41.36]I mean, honestly when I look back, I just feel stupid.
[03:44.20]I know I'm not stupid because I care.
[03:46.42]And I think I did care even then.
[03:48.40]And I think that's why we had a little bit of animosity.
[03:50.98]I always wanted him to really appreciate what I gave to him
[03:53.81]and something that actually really hurt my feelings
[03:56.19]was when he won his Emmy award and he was on the podium.
[03:59.82]I was sitting there with the rest of our team,
[04:02.12]and he thanked everybody at the table
[04:05.20]but he didn't thank me.
[04:06.38]But I was hurt at the time because
[04:08.38]I felt like since day one, it was him and me.
[04:11.33]It was like our show,
[04:12.73]but because it was so life or death for him,
[04:14.85]it was his show.
[04:16.62]And I was just like around, 'cause I was a girl.
[04:19.23]I remember having a conversation with him one time,
[04:21.66]and I was like, "So whose career
[04:23.14]do you think I'm going to have?
[04:24.83]What career do you think you're going to have?"
[04:26.64]He was like, "I think of you like Reese Witherspoon."
[04:28.54]And at the time I was so angry with him.
[04:30.38]I got so miffed, I got very easily miffed.
[04:33.46]It was actually a really big compliment.
[04:35.33]He was very smart from a young age.
[04:37.60]That's kind of the way that we were, we were coexisting.
[04:40.38]I was in school and then a lot of times
[04:42.45]he was doing his own schooling,
[04:45.16]and I would film with my storyline
[04:47.62]and he would be in his own storyline.
[04:49.65]I don't know if the writers were starting to split us up
[04:52.93]because maybe they felt like the chemistry wasn't there.
[04:55.29]But I mean, maybe they just felt like
[04:56.54]it was something that was done already
[04:57.93]in the first season or two.
[04:59.25]And they started to get us into our own separate storylines.
[05:02.33]So I didn't see him a lot.
[05:03.45]He started to really have his own life.
[05:04.86]He started dating Margo Harshman.
[05:06.31]He was like really good friends with A.J.
[05:08.26]A lot of really fun friends of his
[05:10.11]that I still know that I grew up with in the industry.
[05:12.65]So we went to Hawaii to film that "Even Stevens" movie.
[05:15.31]And we had somebody that wanted to show us the town.
[05:18.59]I was about to go off to college
[05:20.01]and he had really become a young man at the time.
[05:22.52]You know, I just felt like he had grown up.
[05:24.82]We were all about to split apart.
[05:26.61]I got pulled into going out with a locations person there
[05:29.98]and he joined.
[05:31.41]And so did the guy who played Mootai.
[05:33.21]And we were all out,
[05:34.81]and it was a Hawaiian tropics swimsuit judging contest.
[05:39.86]Will never forget that night.
[05:41.10]That is a crazy, random night.
[05:42.80]I'm sure he enjoyed it. (laughs)
[05:46.20]What a crazy time. Anyway, we had a blast.
[05:48.65]I mean, obviously over the years
[05:50.21]there were a lot of good moments and you know,
[05:52.30]I know that he cares a lot about that timeframe.
[05:54.72]Not only because was a movie that he did
[05:56.23]and exposing like all the stuff
[05:57.98]that was going on behind the scenes,
[05:59.09]but also because when he did the performance art piece,
[06:01.64]he had such love in his face,
[06:02.96]when he watched "Even Stevens" and he was smiling.
[06:05.84]I'm piecing together reactions from a person I don't know.
[06:08.70]I want to give all the knowledge
[06:10.43]that I have about this person, but you know,
[06:12.10]the person that I knew is not the same person now,
[06:15.65]just based on all of this life experience that he's had.
[06:19.54]And I'm not the same person that he knew.
[06:21.67]The only thing that I can say is that
[06:23.46]I really do kind of wish at the time that I was younger,
[06:25.40]I would have given him a little bit more time
[06:27.42]and energy and love like a real sister.
[06:30.22]I really kind of regret that, kind of makes me sad.
[06:32.93]So everybody's got a Shia story.
[06:34.65]He's like the new Kevin Bacon, seven degrees of it.
[06:37.81]And I always hear these funny stories.
[06:39.33]And this is the other thing about being celeb related.
[06:42.55]Some people are like, "I saw your brother."
[06:44.35]I'm like, "He's not my brother."
[06:46.05]He just popped up out of nowhere
[06:47.48]and he was freestyle rapping or, you know.
[06:50.42]Like my husband randomly bumped into him at a shooting range
[06:53.59]and he was with a bunch of military guys.
[06:55.80]And my husband is a former marine.
[06:57.96]They kind of chatted and he was like,
[06:59.93]"Tell sis I said hi." That's very sweet of him.
[07:02.53]Very sweet of him to say hi.
[07:03.70]The first or second to last time I saw him in person
[07:05.75]outside of the show I was 21, hadn't seen him in years.
[07:09.12]And so he was this big star.
[07:11.04]And I was like, "Oh my God, I'm so happy to see you.
[07:12.66]I'm so happy for you."
[07:13.49]And then I had a boyfriend at the time on the red carpet,
[07:15.76]obviously didn't ...........
