William Saroyan's parents and relatives were Armenian
immigrants who settled in the farming area around
Fresno, California. Saroyan left school at fifteen and went
to work, doing odd jobs. During this time he read widely
and began writing in his distinctive natural style. By the
late 1930s his many short stories, novels and plays had
established him as a writer. Many of his stories have
grown out of his experiences in the Armenian community
around Fresno.
