The ideal of a family life shared by all in 19th century
England survived into the early 20th century, until home
life was seriously dislocated in 1914 by World War I, which
was a war on the largest scale the world had ever known.
But since the last decade of the 19th century new
developments and inventions had been rapidly affecting
the home life of an increasing number of people. Town
and country were knit more closely together by easier
railway travel, cheap and efficient postal services, the
popularity of the bicycle, the development of the petrol
engine and the cheap popular newspaper; such things as
these helped to break down social formalities and to place
women again on a more equal footing with men.
