showing less interest in the theoretical potential of their
staff and more in what they are actually doing at the time.
As an alternative or supplement to judging academic
credentials, many firms have developed “assessmentcentres”
in which employees handle simulated business
problems, in a setting as close to real life as possible, to
demonstrate their competence or indicate the need for
training. Candidates for administrative jobs, for example,
might work their way through a sample in-box. Bosses
find those promoted because of their assessment-centre
scores to be competent and the candidates feel the
