As recently as 2007, Spain was a vigorous creator
of growth and jobs. ---- However, those days are
now over, and in recent years Spain has witnessed
20 per cent unemployment and a huge trade deficit.
In the year 2010, as other European economies
grew again, Spain’s economy shrank. In 2011, its
GDP (Gross Domestic Product) expanded by less
than 1 per cent. The world’s ninth-biggest economy
in 2009 will soon be twelfth, overtaken by Russia,
India and Canada. Recent reforms are a change in
the right direction, but not enough to stop Spain
from falling behind.
