With the coming of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, apprenticeship began to decline as
an institution. Factory mass-production techniques eroded the personal relationship between master
and assistant that apprenticeship demands. Labour was plentiful and cheap, and experience was
usually gained on the job. Nevertheless, certain crafts maintained the tradition of apprenticeship,
and some professions, such as the legal profession in Britain, continued to rely on apprenticeship to
provide practical training. Although the Industrial Revolution opened the doors to unskilled labour,
there is still a place for the kind of skills that only a long period of practical training can provide.
