It is stated in the passage that, prior to 1950, in Africa, ----.
By the 1950s, Africa was among the least developed
of the continents and. according to United Nations
estimates, as much as 70% of its resources of land
and labour were devoted to subsistence production
and only about 5% of its total population was
engaged in wage-earning employment But even with
agriculture there was increasing production for
export: cocoa in Ghana, groundnuts and ail-palm
products in Nigeria, cotton in Uganda, coffee in
Kenya, and maize and sheep-rearing in southern
Africa were outstanding examples. Minerals were
particularly important in bringing about the opening
up of the interior of Africa. For centuries some parts,
like the Gold Coast (now Ghana) had produced gold,
and during the 19th century first diamonds and then
gold were discovered in South Africa, and since then
numerous other minerals have been exploited
including copper and cobalt.
