We learn from the passage that within the Earth's gravitational field ----.
More than half of astronauts suffer from space
sickness, also known as Space Adaptation
Syndrome. Symptoms include headaches, nausea,
vomiting and poor concentration. The main cause of
space sickness is disorientation caused by exposure
to zero gravity conditions. The human body is used
to a much stronger gravitational field on Earth and
organs in the inner ear, along with canals that sense
motion, tell the brain about the location of the limbs
relative to the ground. In other words, they're
responsible for balance. Unfortunately, the signals
from these organs in the inner ear go wrong in zero
gravity, leading to space sickness. Over time
though, the brain learns to ignore them and relies
instead on visual clues, such as the position of the
feet, to determine balance. Astronauts quickly readapt
to Earth's gravity within a few days and there
are probably no long-term effects from this strange
affliction.
