Economic liberalisation and reform generally promote economic development. This is not always the case; for instance, the Soviet Union in the 1930s and East European countries in the 1950s achieved very high rates of economic growth under state control. In the contemporary world, however, state ownership, controls and regulations have generally hindered economic development, whereas, countries like the United States have created strong economies through the implementation of economic liberalisation policies. ____ .
