The abominable snowman, or yeti, is a giant creature believed by Himalayan tribesmen to roam the mountains at night searching for victims. It is described as a creature standing upright, with a covering of black to reddish hair, and with the appearance of a bear, ape, or human. The yeti legend first became known outside the area in 1921, when English explorers found tracks in the snow resembling huge human footprints. Several scientific expeditions failed to find any other evidence of the yeti's existence. Similar creatures are believed to have been sighted elsewhere — such as Bigfoot of the U.S. Pacific Northwest forestland.
