In enabling us lo establish contacts with others, one
quality has almost magical power the quality of
enthusiasm. Winston Churchill, one of the enthusiastic
men of our time, early distinguished himself as a
newspaper correspondent in the Boer War. Most of his
journalistic colleagues were older and more
experienced; they regarded his repeated first-reports
cynically, referring to him as "that lucky devil, Churchill"
Lucky he was, beyond doubt, but what they did not
perceive was the extent to which his luck was attracted
by his matchless enthusiasm
