Scientists have discovered that sunspots, that is,
explosions on the sun's surface, may cause certain
species of whales to become trapped in the shallow
waters of the North Sea. The radiation from sunspots
may interfere with the Earth's magnetic field, which
the whales might be using to help them find their way
in the oceans. Scientists think that this interference
may confuse the whales so that, during their yearly
migration from the Azores, they mistakenly go into
the North Sea instead of the deeper waters of the
Norwegian Sea, their traditional territory.
