(I) Throughout the 18th century pianos were financially beyond the reach of most families. (II) They were generally the property of the gentry and the aristocracy. (III) Many parents still feel today that piano lessons teach their children concentration and self-discipline. (IV) Visiting music masters taught their children, more often the girls, to play the piano. (V) It was thought that ability to play the piano made young women more marriageable.
