Plagiarism is taking someone else’s writing or ideas and
passing them off as one’s own. The word, derived from
the Latin plagiarius, or kidnapper, was first used in the
early 17th century, but undoubtedly, instances of
plagiarism long predate that. Accusations, proven or
not, of plagiarism have frequently featured in academic
writing, journalism and music. In the 1970s, for example,
the former Beatle George Harrison was sued for copying
the melody of the Chiffons’ He’s So Fine for his own
song My Sweet Lord. Plagiarism in music may often be
unintentional. This is less likely in scientific writing,
literature and journalism, that is, it may be deliberate. In
2009, the British poet Andrew Motion was accused of
‘shameless burglary’ by a military historian, Ben
Shephard, after using passages from a book by
Shephard. However, in the age of cyber technology,
plagiarism has become both easier to commit and
easier to detect, as many students and teachers have
realized.
