I) As a language learner, you may feel discouraged when you hear a dialect of English quite different from what you've learnt. II) If you have a chance to visit London, you may hear some of the famous ‘Cockney rhyming slang'. IIl) This is a regional dialect which came into use in Victorian times as a secret code for criminals in order to confuse the police. IV) It is a colourful feature of the language which is still very much alive today. V) Often, bars and pubs in the area will have beer mats showing examples and trans¬lations for people who are unfamiliar with it.
