A ban on cigarette advertising would be “both futile and damaging to the interests of consumers” says the British Advertising Association (B.A.A.). A research study published recently shows that a ban would have no effect on cigarette consumption, but would deprive consumers of valuable information relating to tar levels in tobacco and the dangers to health from various brands. The study shows that in countries like Italy, Norway and Poland, where advertising has been prohibited, there has been no subsequent drop in smoking.
