The canal ……………
Between 1817 and 1825, New York built the Erie Canal at a cost of over $ 7.000,000 and linked the Hudson Valley to the Great Lakes.
The canal was an immediate success. Even though the rates charged for travel on the canal were extremely reasonable, the tremendous volume of traffic on the waterway made it possible to pay for the initial cost of the canal within twelve years.
The success of the Erie Canal guaranteed New York its place as the largest city in the United States.
