The Cannes Film Festival, started in 1946 in an effort to encourage Cote d'Azur tourism, offers several hundred feature films that vary greatly in quality and audience appeal. Although the 3-week-long event is less prestigious than it once was, it remains the film industry's most important movie marketplace.
