In the Battle of Cannae ............... .

The great Carthaginian general Hannibal
was, like Napoleon 2,000 years later, a
master strategist who had the ability to select
the most favourable terrain for a battle. His
successful tactic at the battle of Cannae in
216 BC was to allow his light infantry to fall
back before the Roman advance. The
Carthaginian cavalry then moved out to the
flanks to surround the numerically superior
Roman army. This victory was not followed
up for several reasons, however: Hannibal's
lack of naval support, his very long supply
lines, and inadequate recruitment policies to
obtain more mercenaries. The war ended
eventually in a Roman victory. In the Third
Punic War from 149 to 146 BC, Rome
destroyed the city of Carthage and declared
the region as a Roman province.
