Hong Kong, with a population of about 6.8 million at mid-2000,
is a small but dynamic city which has earned an international
reputation as a leading commercial and financial center as well
as a highly efficient port. Subsequent historical and political
events led to the development of the manufacturing industry.
Hong Kong has also seen a rapid expansion of its services
sector in the past two decades, contributing over 85 per cent of
Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in recent years.
Hong Kong has a two-tier system of representative
government. At the central level, the Legislative Council
legislates, approves taxation and public expenditure and raises
questions on the work of the Government. According to the
Basic Law, the Legislative Council is to be constituted by
election.
