According to a survey published on Friday, many of middle - school girls in China wish they were boys, saying that boys enjoy greater freedom and have brighter future. The survey carried out among 7000 middle school students - ranging in age from 13 to 18 - and their parents showed that 44,2 percent of girl students wished they were boys. Asked why, respondents said boys were freer, didn't have as many restrictions placed on them, teachers paid more attention to them and boys had better prospects. The status of women in China has greatly improved since the communist revolution in 1949 but Chinese have traditionally preferred boys to girls.
