A film director's style is usually personal and recognisable, but every rule has its exception. Not long ago, I was in a theatre watching Roman Polonsky's Macbeth. Suddenly the actor slowed considerably. A frightening red circle began moving outward from the centre of the screen, engulfing first the actors and finally the entire screen. I was sitting on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next horror, which never came. It was not Polonsky's terrifying style, after all, but a fly in the film projector.
