The capital city of Bosnia, Sarajevo gained world renown in June 1914, when Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife were assassinated there by a Serbian terrorist. The incident led directly to the start of World War I five weeks later. In more peaceful times, Sarajevo was the site of the Winter Olympics in 19……….. . During this civil war, which lasted from 1992 to 1996, Sarajevo was largely destroyed and thousands of people were killed and many more fled the city.
