In 1849, at the age of 28, Dostoevsky was
sentenced to death with several others for attending
meetings of a group of Utopian ' socialist
intellectuals in St Petersburg. The group was lined
up before a firing squad only to be told at the last
moment that their sentences had been commuted to
exile in Siberia. Dostoevsky spent the next five
years in a convict prison at Omsk, an experience
which produced his first major novel, "The House of
the Dead'1. This was followed by five years of
enforced military service in the garrison at Semey,
which was then starting to prosper mildly as a
trading town, but was still as remote and
inhospitable a place as the Tsarist authorities could
think of for rebellious citizens.
