Michael suddenly began to talk about the first thing that came into his head and, within five minutes, he had monopolised the attention of all those present in the room. He was extremely good at 'small talk'. He knew how to sound quite sincere and how to look as if he believed that those listening to him were just as sincere as he himself was. He was also very good at inserting a witty or amusing remark into a sentence, quite casually, as if he considered it hardly worth any attention, whereas, in fact, this - and perhaps the whole speech - may have been carefully planned and rehearsed, and may have been used several times before.
