Having spent much of his life as a newspaper
reporter, enduring arrest in Havana and a
hijacking out of Beirut, Peter Hopkirk
published his first book in 1980. "Foreign
Devils on the Silk Road" was based on the true
story of the turn-of-the-century search for the
lost cities and buried treasure of Chinese
Central Asia. A well-paced work with cliffhanger
chapter endings leaving the reader
unable to wait for the next, and a gripping plot,
it established his name in a genre mixing
travel, exploration and imperial adventure. He
has followed it with five more books, the bestknown
being the hugely popular "The Great
Game", which contains enough terrifying
