The swastika is a symbol that appeared in
many different ancient cultures throughout the
world. While it had a multitude of meanings,
all were positive. In some countries, it was
viewed as a symbol of the sun, while in others
it represented the revolution of the stars, the
four seasons or the wheel of life. Others saw it
in terms of the union of man and woman or of
the beginning and the end. In the Hindu
language, the word itself means 'it is well'.
These positive connotations all changed when
Adolf Hitler chose the swastika to symbolise
Nazism. When he wrote Mein Kampf he said
the symbol stood for the fight for victory of the
Aryan man, which was eternally anti-Jewish.
What, had previously been a joyful symbol
became a dreaded sign of horrible destruction
and hatred.
