When the comic character Popeye the Sailor
made his first appearance in the 1930s, spinach
consumption in the United States rose by 33
percent. Why? It was spinach that gave Popeye
his mighty strength and big muscles, because it
was so full of iron. However, the belief that
spinach promoted strength was based on a very
simple mathematical error. Nutrition
researchers in the 1890s put a decimal point in
the wrong place, thus giving spinach ten times
more iron than it actually contains. Modern
nutritionists believe that as a source of iron,
spinach is no better — and no worse — than
any other green vegetable. Its iron content is
only average, and the little iron it does have is
virtually ineffective, because the body cannot
absorb it directly.
