feel that one cannot be a true Paraguayan unless
they can speak the language, so they are proud
of Guaraní.

II. Though Spanish and Guaraní both have official
status, it is Guaraní which most people regard as
their real national language.

III. In Paraguay, we find an interesting example of the
competing claims of an indigenous language and
a world language for the status of being the
national language.

IV. Guaraní is also felt to be the language which best
expresses their distinctive culture and traditions.

V. These positive feelings towards Guaraní make
Paraguay unique among Latin American countries,

with a distinctive national language – Guaraní.
