King William divided the country among his nobles who in return promised to fight for him and do as he said. A clever ruler, William made sure that none of his followers held more land than he did. He gathered all landholders together and made them take an oath never to fight against him. Despite all these skilful policies, William also made his people very angry. In order that no mischief might take place at night, he started a curfew, making it obligatory for people to put off their lights and go indoors when a bell was rung at nights. What's more, he destroyed a large number of village houses and farms just because he wanted the land be turned into a forest to satisfy his hunger for hunting.
