How to Keep Your Child Safe on the Internet?

Goals:

  • 1-) Prevent kids from accessing harmful contents on the web.
  • 2-) Help to increase security of computers by blocking Malwares, Phishing and Scam sites, viruses and fraudulent contents (DNS servers do these for you)
  • 3-) Increase kids' safety on the internet by defining Filtered DNS to their account, and Non-Filtered DNS settings to your account to navigate blocked websites (by your ISP provider). In this way you do not have to change DNS settings back and forth on shared computers.

Requirement for Kid Shield:

  • 1-) In addition to administrator account, you should create single or multiple limited account(s) for your kids.
  • 2-) You should define DNS settings for each user on a computer
  • 3-) All administrator accounts should be protected with password

Suggestions:

  • You should create limited user account(s) for kids (or non-advanced users):
kids (or non-advanced users) might cause harm your computer when they use administrator account. (they might unconsciously change PC settings, or allow installation request of a malicious program etc.)
  • Protect administrator accounts with password:
Limited users cannot change computer's vital settings, cannot install and remove program, cannot modify or delete system files etc. without knowing administrator password.
  • You should define Filtered DNS settings for kids' account
Filtered DNS:Blocks, non-family friendly websites, Malwares, Phishing and Scam sites, protect from virus and fraudulent content
Strictly Filtered DNS: in addition to Filtered DNS it also blocks file sharing websites.
Non-Filtered DNS:Allows non-family friendly websites and blocks Malwares, Phishing and Scam sites, protect from virus and fraudulent content
Advantage of using custom DNS settings (other than your ISP provider): When you click a link on a webpage, you might be redirected to a potentially harmful websites. Most of DNS servers keep records of phishing and scam, potentially harmful websites. So using custom DNS settings (event non-filterd one) help protecting your pc from potentially harmful websites or contents.
  • Can we define non-filtered DNS settings for limited users:
Some parents might prefer to use a limited user account with non-filter DNS settings. In this case they should protect their account with password to prevent kids from using parents accounts to bypass their Filtered DNS settings.
  • Change ADSL router DNS settings:
You can change ADSL router DNS settings with a Filtered DNS, and then change your DNS settings to a non-Filtered one (if you want). in this way all users (also computers that connect to the internet via that ADSL router, except administrators or users which have custom DNS settings) have to use Filtered DNS settings on router. In this way you can improve security of all PC on your network with a single settings change.
  • Filtered DNS for Administrator accounts:
Administrator accounts cannot be forced to use Filtered DNS (or other) settings. Because they have rights to make any changes that they wish. Suggestion: use Filtered DNS on your real computer, and use Virtual PC with Non-Filtered DNS to surf on the internet without any concern and restriction (eliminating some restrictions might require VPN or Proxy).(Oracle VM VirtualBox freeware)
  • You don't need to use the Kid Shield with below situations
    • Defining the same DNS for all user
    • Defining the same type of DNS for all users (all Filtered DNS or all Non-Filtered DNS or all Filtered DNS with blocking file sharing websites)
When you want all users to use same DNS settings, you should use DNS changer tab to change DNS settings for all user, and also you should stop the kid shield (or delete users' DNS settings) because no need to use the Kid Shield in such cases.
  • Every user should have a DNS settings:
Assumptions: assume a PC that have one administrator user account and one limited user account.
    • Define Filtered DNS for limited user and leave administrator account as it is When limited user log on, kid shield will change DNS settings to Filtered DNS for limited user. When administrator log on Kid Shield will not change DNS settings because no DNS settings for administrator. so administrator will use the Filtered DNS too.
    • Define Non-Filtered DNS administrator and leave for limited user account as it is like above situation, limited user will use Non-Filtered DNS too.
  • vs. vs. vs. ...

How does it work?

With Smart DNS Changer you can define different DNS server settings (Filtered or non-filtered) for each user on a computer. And when a user logged on his/her user account, defined DNS server settings automatically changes for that user. For example:Assume that your computer has one Administrator user account for you and one limited user account for your kids. Define Non-filtered DNS for Administrator account and Filtered DNS (Family Friendly) for limited account. When Administrator logged on DNS settings automatically chages to Non-filtered DNS, and when limited user logged on (or switch user) DNS settings automatically chages to Filtered DNS.

Use FREEWARE Smart DNS Changer to Keep Your Child Safe on the Internet by following below steps.
